Research suggests that losing weight can be a valuable tool in managing psoriasis. Studies have shown that weight loss, whether through diet or surgery, can improve psoriasis symptoms and even help medications work better.
The Power of Diet in Psoriasis Management
Several studies have investigated the effect of a low-calorie diet on psoriasis. In a randomized, controlled trial, Jensen et al. compared a low-energy diet (800-1000 kcal/d) with a routine diet for patients with psoriasis who had a BMI greater than 27. The low-energy diet group lost significantly more weight and achieved a greater reduction in psoriasis severity than the control group. Another study by Gisondi et al. examined the efficacy of combining a low-calorie diet with cyclosporine for individuals with moderate to severe psoriasis and a BMI greater than 30 kg/m². The group that followed a low-calorie diet reduced their body weight by 5% to 10% and had a significantly greater improvement in psoriasis compared to the control group that received cyclosporine alone.
Naldi et al demonstrated that dietary intervention with associated weight loss led to significant improvement in psoriasis severity within just 20 weeks.

Weight Loss Surgery: A Game-Changer for Psoriasis?
Weight loss surgery, such as gastric bypass, has also shown promise in improving psoriasis. A retrospective study by Hossler et al. on 34 patients with psoriasis who underwent weight loss surgery found that 62% reported improvement in their psoriasis after surgery. Additionally, patients tended to decrease their need for more aggressive psoriasis therapies after surgery.
O O O Ozempic? How treatments for weight loss and diabetes can impact Psoriasis.
Multiple studies have indicated a potential role for glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), including semaglutide (brand names include Ozempic and Wegovy), can play a role in psoriasis management.
Petkovic-Dabic et al recently published (1/2025) a randomized clinical trial demonstrating the efficacy of Semaglutide on psoriatic lesions in Obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Taking Action: What You Can Do
If you have psoriasis and are overweight or obese, talk to your doctor about weight loss strategies. Losing even a small amount of weight can make a noticeable difference in your psoriasis symptoms. Your doctor can help you find a safe and effective weight loss plan that is right for you.
Remember, it’s always crucial to consult your doctor before making any major changes to your diet or exercise routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
